In 2018, a group of us got together to work on the first ever Habesha High School Formal.
The idea came about because it felt like our parents were always taking us to all sorts of Habesha gatherings. As we got older, it seemed like none of these events were for anyone our age. There were many parties where the adults were hanging out with their friends, recalling old times and dancing up a storm while the kids, the few that were there, were sitting around looking bored, on their phones or begging to go home........Even high school graduations or birthday parties were often designed with the adults in mind and all the kids left in the basement!
After hearing too many complaints, our parents challenged us to come up with our own party and the Habesha High School Formal was born – a night for high schoolers, organized by high schoolers…we could hang out with OUR friends, meet new friends, look our best and listen to OUR music!
While we are all about having fun, we also thought it was important to do something to help others so we agreed that any profits would go to the Wegene Foundation to help kids in Ethiopia and in the US.
We hope the event in 2019 will be the first of many to come and it will keep getting better and better so that one day, when we’ve all graduated from high school, we can look back and say we were there when it all started.
Thanks to those who joined us on March 9th, and, if you didn't make it, hope to see you next year....
